Crown Housing Roof Load
Posted by: Howard Smith (IP Logged)
Date: April 15, 2008 08:24AM My mother has a 1997 doubwide 32x50 crown home manufactured in Phil Cambell, Al.A trough formed on the roof edge near the facia board, which was encased in vinyl. When taking off the shingles I discovered that approx. 12 to 16 inches of the chipboard underlayment was rotted along with the facia, which was also chipboard. The rafters are 2x2's with steel plates between cords. The ends were rotted and I'm going to scab with 2x4's of 24 inches ea.
My big concern is that I wanted to cut out approx 24 inches of the underlayment and replace that and the shingles and then use 1x4 firing strips on top of the shingles to attach 26 gauge metal roofing panels. The roof pitch is appx 12 degrees, almost 3 in 12. After discovering the 2x2 rafters and reading other post on this site, I now have doubts about the load factor. I had been informed by a dealer the this year model etc. should carry the added roofing. What is the answer?? Re: Crown Housing Roof Load

Date: April 15, 2008 11:45AM We have overlaid the roofs of dozens of doublewides The new metal roof systems add almost nothing per sqft. You might even want to consider adding a layer of Styrofoam for additional insulation below the metal.

Date: April 15, 2008 11:30PM There should be no problem...I sold Crown Homes in the 1997 time frame...In total they were quite good homes....The material you are calling "chipboard" is OSB....The rotting around the edges is from winter ice under the shingles...Very few homes of any sort in the SE have ice dams around the edges but a few manufactured homes do..Unfortunately Crown must not have...Repair the roof, hug your mom and ask her to enjoy her home.... Date: April 17, 2008 08:08AM Thanks for restoring my confindence fellas, I appreciate the help and the work removing the rotted material and replacing shingles is about finished. Next week it's putting on metal and cutting around those roof vents. That shouls be fun too! Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
