Interest is money paid for the use of someone else’s money. Banks pay you “interest” when
you leave your money on deposit with them in savings accounts and certificates of deposit.
You pay the bank interest on money you borrow for your home, cars, and other items.
Interest rate is the percentage of money added to your principal each time interest is calculated. In other words it is the cost you pay to "rent the money"
Q.What are annual percentage rates?
A.The annual percentage rate (APR) is the cost that you pay for a loan. It is expressed as a
percentage rate on a yearly basis.
Examples:
18% = you are paying 18% of the amount you owe as interest on the loan each year
6.5% = you are paying six and a half percent of the amount you owe as interest on the loan each year
Q.Why is it important to compare APRs when shopping for a loan?
A.The APR allows you to compare quickly the cost of a loan from several lenders. It is the best
measure of the true cost of that loan to you. The lower the annual percentage rate, the lower the cost of
credit.
Some lenders may offer higher interest rates with a longer time to pay back. This could make the monthly payment smaller but the cost of the loan will be a lot higher over the total years you are paying.
